A client is any device - laptop, desktop, smartphone or tablet - that is connected or can connect to a Zone product via WebApp.
Each device can have its own dedicated set of permissions. This is very useful to regulate who can or cannot adjust settings within a Zone product. It keeps things simple when several staff may be responsible for separate areas of a business.
When a new client connects to Zone, they will have all permissions by default. It is best practice to name and keep note of existing known clients, allowing you to recognise when a new client connects.
- To configure a client, navigate to Settings > Devices > Client Configuration.
Ensure you have cookies enabled in your browser settings.
The device you are currently using will always appear at the top of the list. - Click on the device you want to configure. You are presented with name and permissions
- Give the device in question a user friendly name
- Set permissions for that device
- IMPORTANT - click save to ensure settings are saved
- We advise that the installer settings are passcode locked to ensure that the settings are not accidentally changed - see WebApp - Passcode
- If you want to remove a device configuration, click in the device configuration and press delete.
Worked Example
In the example below, we'll configure up a newly connected client. The brief given by the venue owner is that this is a staff tablet, to be used to control zone levels and trigger routines in the Bar (Zone 1), Restaurant (Zone 2) and Longue (Zone 3) only.
Firstly, we'll name the device. This will allow those with access to the client configuration to monitor or change any permissions in future.
Next, we'll remove any zones and permissions we do not wish this devices to access. Per the brief given to us by the venue owner, we'll untick zone 4, and remove all permissions except for 'Can use routines'. Always click save to ensure any changes you've made are kept.
Viewing WebApp from this client, we can now see that the only options visible from the Home Screen are Zones and Routines. When selecting Zones, you can see that the source selection is not available.
Therefore we have met the brief of the venue in restricting permissions of this device.
Top Tips
- Open the browser of the client you are configuring to see the changes happen in real time.
- Locate button - if you are configuring a collection of similar devices use the local button and a pop-up message will appear on the associated device to assist you with naming and finding that device.
- Allowed zones - view zones that are in the side menu bar. If you set only one zone visible, it removes the side navigation.
- WebApp can create separate clients for the same device connecting via the Zones mDNS name (.local) and IP address. It is recommended you define these when naming.
- The hard limit of Web Clients connected at one time is 16. Running this many instances of WebApp at one time is not recommended and may cause operational latency.
We recommend using a soft limit maximum of 12-14 devices connected at one time.
